Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient art that has been practiced for over 5000 years in the Eastern world and has obviously passed the test of time. Penicillin was discovered barely 70 years ago. American "Western" medicine is without a doubt more scientific but is not as holistic. For the most part, the "Have a problem, take a pill" approach is accepted by Americans because it is all they know. The problem is that there are too many patients who don't fall into that category. The new, informed patients are craving, and deserve more. At times, it seems that physicians are being pushed away from the "care" part of health care.
As a western trained physician, Dr. Mitchell is excited about the opportunity to combine Eastern and Western modalities in his approach to patient care. After taking an extensive course for medical acupuncture taught by America's most renowned physician acupuncturist, Dr. Joseph Helms, has a new appreciation for the human person and how illness, stress and pain affects each one of us differently.
Acupuncture is relatively new in America, having been practiced mostly in California and at resort spas as recently as the late 1970's. Medical Acupuncture practiced by physicians is even younger. It is, however, gaining momentum in the West and it is an excellent adjunct to our way of practicing medicine.
